Skill Development Units
Community Based Outreach Unit
Our CBR program aims to prevent disease and disability in the rural population through immunization and primary health care education, and to empower men and women with disabilities through small loans and skills training. The program focuses on five areas:
- Survey — data collection on population size, socio-economic status and disability prevalence in each village
- Immunization — coordinating with the Punjab Directorate of Health on polio eradication campaigns
- Medical Treatment — a mobile team of doctor, physiotherapist and community worker visits villages, referring major cases elsewhere
- Primary Education & Vocational Training — health education for mothers and children on hygiene and daily life
- Self Employment Scheme — small loans to women with disabilities and other deserving people, with a strong recovery rate
Skill Development Units
The Skill Development Centre equips persons with disabilities of both genders with skills to become productive, active members of society, offering courses in computer training, cell phone repairing, arts and crafts, and sewing and stitching.
Computer Training Center
Open to disabled students, and to able-bodied students at a nominal fee, offering three diploma courses: Computerized Embroidery Designing, Webpage Designing, and Office Automation. Since inception, 271 disabled and 535 able-bodied students have been trained — 67% of disabled and 58% of able-bodied graduates found employment in banks, post offices, government offices, PTCL and schools, with some working abroad.
Cell Phone Repairing
Instruction from a qualified instructor, popular among young boys — 41 students trained in a recent year, 26 of them disabled.
Arts and Crafts
Started in 2007 to develop skills in academically weak or disabled students, training them to make paper bags, envelopes, bangles, jewelry and decorated boxes.
Sewing and Stitching
Three-month courses in drafting, cutting, sewing and hand embroidery, training girls, both able and disabled, toward a respectable living.
Earning Opportunity
Young people with disabilities and their family members are also paid a monthly wage to produce items for sale in commercial outlets, providing a sense of satisfaction and pride in contributing to family income.
